Why an Intervention Framework for Creating Safe Spaces in Extra Curricular Activities is needed

The Data

For two years, the Vermont Principals' Association (VPA) has been collecting data on reports from fans, athletes, coaches, athletic directors and school administrators about situations that occur during athletics that violate our safe spaces in athletics initiative. After a hate speech situation that drew lots of media and state attention, the VPA put into place the reporting form to empower those to speak up and transform the landscape of athletics in Vermont. We have the data of what sports, what type of behavior is occurring, what schools are involved and the effect it's having on athletes. This study aims to continue this work by creating a framework for intervention to incidents that are sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic and/or misogynistic for schools to use when they receive reports.

The Scope

In the 2022-23 school year, the number of high school athletic contests in core sports on Scorebook Live was 3,190. The number of contests is estimated at 4,200 in high schools athletics. Of these, 1.1% of the contest created a report of behaviors contrary to creating safe spaces. However, the 1.1% of behaviors caused large disruptions and harm to student-athletes and athletic communities.

The Framework

Our framework encompasses various key elements that contribute to the success of extracurricular interventions. We emphasize collaboration and communication among students, teachers, parents, and community members to create a supportive ecosystem. By leveraging the collective expertise and resources, we can ensure that every student finds their niche and receives the necessary guidance and encouragement. We look to eradicate unwanted behaviors in extra-curricular activities so that all can unlock their passions and thrive.

Using the framework

We invite you to explore our Intervention Framework and discover how it can transform your school's extracurricular landscape.
